The Day Before

The bags are nearly packed - we're taking the small carry-ons that National Geographic sent us (smaller than a normal carry-on roller bag), the backpacks and fanny packs (yuk) that NG also sent, as well as one larger bag. We have a tote bag folded up inside the large bag so we can bring a few souvenirs home. Finding space for all the cash NG suggests we bring is tricky - we're not used to carrying all the expense money in denominations of $20 bills or less - but apparently there won't be good places to exchange travelers checks (and we'd get too much local currency that we couldn't get rid of) so American bills are the way to go.

We've packed so we can check in tomorrow at the Mayflower Hotel and then head to the Newseum - the newest museum in D.C. We have about 4 hours between landing at Reagan National and the 4:45 meeting time for all the travelers to go to the National Geographic Association headquarters. We'll have an orientation there before heading back to the Mayflower Hotel for a Bon Voyage dinner.

We are so very excited for you and will be living vicariously through you!
George is most interested in Machu Picchu as this is the one place in the world he wants to visit. He has read many books and wants to spend about 3 days there. Let us know what you would do there if you had 3 or 4 days on top of the hill not down below. Or would that be too many days as nothing to do after 1st day of exploring.
I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on Petra as that is one of my favorite places. We stayed at Taybet Zamen a hotel built in the ruins of an old Jordanian stone village. It's about 8 miles from the ruins at Petra and is a totally unique experience. We went by where you are staying and it is right by the entrance of Petra so better location and actually a better hotel (more modern).
We spent 5 hours and climbed up and down hills and cliffs to go into some of the cliff dwellings. Amazing that the Christians escaped to Petra (that was a very long journey back in those days) to avoid the Romans and persecution.
I wanted to enter on horseback galloping into the seq like Indian Jones and the Lost Crusade. Reality was they put us on horses but someone walked the horse with us on it. Maybe you can go in via camel?!!
Make sure you get a picture of you and Tim on a camel in front of the pyramids in Egypt! You are living our dream and we are thrilled for you 
Cannot wait to see your pictures and read your blog. Safe journey and Bon Voyage!!!!!!!
We love you!!
